Kids After School Knit Club

Kids love to make things, and I think it is one of the most important things for their mental health. Playing with wool is a wonderful way to focus on something that is nothing to do with school and sparks their creativity, while at the same time improves concentration, fine motor skills. It also helps them become resilient to not getting things right first time, and being ok with that. Learning to knit and crochet is by it’s very nature a hands-on, learn-as-you-go skill, and by not mastering it immediately, it teaches them that that is just the way you learn. It encourages patience and determination to ‘get it’, which is such a satisfying thing to see and experience. The sense of achievement kids get at the end of a session when they have made something with their own hands is just wonderful.

And if that wasn’t enough, these crafts have scientifically proven benefits to the mental health of young people (all ages actually). It can have an intensely calming effect on overactive brains, so neurodivergent children in particular can access the soothing effect of the repetitive motions of knitting and crochet without even realizing it.

Ideally this club is aimed at children aged 10 and above, as it does require some motor skills. If you have a younger child who you feel is adept, or would benefit from learning these skills, then please get in touch.
